Employer Information
What
Is an Externship? An externship is a one or two-day job shadowing experience
that provides students with the opportunity to observe
and network with professionals, investigate a career field,
clarify career goals and interests, and function within
a work environment.
Externships will take place during
winter term, January, 2008

explore career interests and goals, we suggest the
following activities and experiences:
- Sit-in on staff
meetings;
- Complete office
tasks or assist with projects;
- Conduct informational
interviews of staff;
- Observe client
interactions;
- Tour the facilities;
- Review organization
mission/vision statement;
- Explain office
policies and procedures;
- Discuss current
trends in the profession; and
- Explore potential
career paths within the organization and the profession.
You may have additional ideas to help students learn
more about careers and the work environment.

Placement Process
In late November/early
December you will receive
an email from the University
Career Center with all
applications
to your externship. At that time, decide which
student(s) to invite to be an extern.
We ask that you notify all students
who apply whether or not they have been accepted. We
also ask that you notify the University Career Center
who will be externing at your organization in order
to provide a professional development workshop to those
students selected.

Comments from Past Student Participants
“ It
was an insightful experience into my particular program.
Learning about the Organization and all of the great
things that they do for their clients was a real eye
opener for me.”
“I
got a realistic look at the inner workings of the Sales and Marketing Department. I feel the Sales and Marketing team went above and beyond what I expected from them: the
time and effort that they put into the organization and execution of my internship made the experience an invaluable one. Through observing
first-hand the ins and outs of their company, I really
got a taste of what it would be like to pursuea career in that type of environment.”
“I have a better idea of the work and the labor field in general after this experience.
I also gained valuable information and built up a network of contact people.”
