What is an externship?
An externship is a one or two-day job shadowing experience that provides an opportunity to:

  • observe and network with professionals
  • investigate a career field
  • clarify career goals and interests
  • be involved in a professional work environment

The Terp Externship Program takes place during the winter term.

What are the benefits?
Terp Externship is a FREE program that gives you the opportunity to:

  • Experience a work environment
  • Explore the career field of your choice
  • Build mentoring relationships with professionals
  • Start developing a professional network
  • Get a head start in marketing yourself for internship and full-time job opportunities

What will I do as an extern?
All externship experiences are unique. Examples of what you might do include:

  • Sit-in on staff meetings;
  • Complete office tasks or assist with projects;
  • Conduct informational interviews of staff;
  • Observe client interactions;
  • Tour the facilities;
  • Review organization mission and vision statement;
  • Learn about office policies and procedures;
  • Review current trends in the profession; and
  • Explore potential career paths within the organization as well as within the profession

Who is eligible?
All undergraduate students currently enrolled at the University of Maryland, College Park are eligible.

Is compensation provided?
No. Students are responsible for all expenses including transportation, lodging, meals, etc.

How do I get placed?
Information regarding externships currently offered is available on Careers4Terps. Sign into Careers4Terps and go to the “job posting” section. Under position type search “externship.” You may apply for as many externships as you are interested in.

Employers will be contacted after the deadline with all applications to their externship. They will select externs from the applications and will contact you directly if accepted as an extern in their organization.

How do I get an application?
Applications are available in the Resource Room, 3100 Hornbake Library, and here. . Fall 2009 Application [Word] Save the document in Word. Fill it out. Save again and upload the application as a document in Careers4Terps by going to the home page and, on the left side, login.


When and where are the information
Application deadline: Friday, November 13, 2009 at 5:00 pm.

Applications must be uploaded to your Careers4Terps profile along with your resume. Please submit both documents to each externship position you apply for.

They will not be accepted in person or via e-mail or fax.


When and where are the information sessions and orientations?
All sessions will be held in the University Career Center, Hornbake Library-South Wing, 3rd Floor.

How to Find an Internship or Externship

  • Tuesday, September 9th,  12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
  • Monday, September 14th,  12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
  • Wednesday, September 23rd,  5:00 pm – 6:00 pm
  • Thursday, October 1st,  12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
  • Thursday, October 15th,  4:00 pm – 5:00 pm
  • Monday, October 19th,  5:00 pm – 6:00 pm
  •  Thursday, November 5th,  4:00 pm – 5:00 pm


     Participant Orientations (attendance is mandatory)
  • Tuesday, December 1st, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
  • Thursday, December 3rd, 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm
  • Wednesday, December 9th, 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm
