International
Students
Challenges During
the Job Search -
How to Overcome Them
Perceived
hiring complexities
Employers often think extra paperwork is involved when hiring international students.
Not true. if a student is on OPT, the employer need not do any more paperwork
than a US applicant. With regard to H-1 visa application, paperwork is required
but it is not as daunting as most employers think it is.
Perceived lack
of commitment to the job
Employers often think that since international students can only work in the
US for a limited period of time, they will not be as committed to the job as
US citizens and permanent residents. However, most entry-level employees stay
at their company for about 2 or 3 years anyway. An international student is more
likely to stay at the same company for at least 3 years if not more, because
the H-1 visa is tied to a specific company and moving companies will require
paperwork and additional fees.
Animosity
toward foreign workers
Some companies don’t want to hire foreign workers
because they feel jobs are being taking away from Americans.
There is not much a student can do to reassure
the employer other than emphasizing their skills and outline the benefits they
will bring to the company. Stress diversity and language skills.
