The On-Campus Interview (OCI) Program is an opportunity
for employers and students to connect during
on-site interviews in the University Career
Center. The program attracts employers from
business, technology, services, education,
non-profit organizations, and government
agencies.
During the 2007-08 academic year there were nearly
2,000 employer visits to campus to conduct on
campus interviews. Most OCI positions are post-graduation
full-time positions, although employers also
recruit for part-time positions and internships
by scheduling an OCI.

Who
can participate
in OCI?
Only
University of Maryland College Park students
and recent graduates are eligible to participate
in on-campus interviewing. Alumni are only eligible
for the first 6 months following their graduation.
How
can I participate in
OCI?
to Careers4Terps at http://www.careercenter.umd.edu/home.cfm.
You will select “student” or “alumni” in
the drop down box near the top right of the page,
then login on the next page with your University
Directory ID and password (Alumni have a separate
Careers4Terps login and password).
You must upload
your resume. Then you can search for positions
meeting your skills, background, and education.
Review the job qualifications to determine if
you meet the employer's four specific selection
criteria: major, student status, degree, and
work authorization status. If you match the employers
requirements for these four criteria, you will
be able to apply for the position online by selecting
the appropriate resume and other application
materials and clicking the apply button.
When
do employers interview
on-campus?
During the fall and spring semesters. OCI
Schedule
It does not take place in the summer, although
you should be preparing for your job hunt and researching
employers.
Why
wasn't I chosen for an
interview?
Students
not obtaining interviews often don't meet the employer's
criteria (major, student status, degree, and citizenship
status). If the criteria are met, then the student's
experience, GPA, or lack of previous internship
experience will influence the employer's decision.
The job market is competitive. Many employers actively
recruit students who maintain a high GPA while
gaining work experience with internships and part-time
positions, participating in campus student organizations,
and/or volunteering.
Many students do not submit high quality resumes
even though they are good candidates for the position.
A resume that is not targeted to the employer/industry
and doesn't reflect all of your knowledge, experience,
skills, and qualities, reduces your chances of
obtaining an interview. The University Career Center
strongly encourages you to have your resume
critiqued before applying for positions.
We review resumes in Career
Assistance.

What
can I do if I miss
the application
deadline date? Contact
the employer and explain your situation and
qualifications. Employers can extend deadlines
or give University Career Center staff permission
to add students after a deadline has passed.
Review jobs in Careers4Terps on a regular
basis and monitor the deadline application
dates.
What
are additional methods
to obtain an on-campus
interview?
1.
Attend the employer's information session bringing
two or three resumes. Some students have been
able to get an OCI interview because the employer
met them face-to-face and reviewed their resume.
2. Students who are well
prepared and make favorable
impressions can arrange
interviews at career fairs.
3. Contact the employer directly by e-mail
and request an interview. This method is least
favored because recruiters may be traveling and
not respond in a timely manner.
NOTE:
If the employer replies to your e-mail stating
that you should schedule an interview at the University
Career Center, forward the e-mail to us (ucc-studenthelp@umd.edu)
and we will add your name to the schedule. In the
e-mail, tell us why you are writing and give us
your name, e-mail address, phone number, and UM
student UID number. Check the schedule of time
slots and indicate your preference. If possible,
we will accommodate your request. Unless the schedule
is open sign-up (first come, first served), we
must have authorization from the employer to add
you to a schedule when you don't match the required
qualifications.
How
do I find out if an
employer has selected
me for an interview?
to Careers4Terps.
Click "Interviews" (on the bar at the
top)
Select the “Interview Requests” tab.
Here you will see your status for all of the applications
you have submitted. This status may be invited,
not invited, alternate, or pending.
When you are selected as an alternate you are not
guaranteed an interview slot and may only sign
up if a slot remains after the invited students
have had a period of time to signup.

I've
been selected/accepted
for an interview. How
do I sign up for an interview
time?
Once
selected, you may schedule an interview by
clicking on the “interviews" link in
the header, click the 'Interview Requests'
tab, and click the 'schedule interview'
button in the 'Options' column. Then, select
an available date and time and click the 'submit'
button. Once submitted, you can find the interview
under the 'Scheduled Interviews' tab. In addition,
an alert will appear on your homepage informing
you that you have been selected. The alert
provides you with a hyper-link that takes you
directly to the 'Interview Requests' tab.
What
should I do if I can't
make my interview appointment?
How do I cancel the interview?
What are the consequences
of not canceling properly?
Cancellation
Policy: Students are required to contact the
University Career Center to cancel an on-campus
interview as least 2 business days before the
scheduled date.
For example, if the interview is scheduled for
Monday, students need to cancel by 5:00 pm on Wednesday.
If the interview is scheduled for Thursday, students
need to cancel by 5:00 pm on Monday.
If
a situation arises after the cancellation deadline
that requires you to
cancel the interview,
please contact the University Career Center immediately, ucc-studenthelp@umd.edu,
and also let the employer know.
No Show Policy: A student is
considered a "no show" when he/she
fails to cancel an interview with sufficient
notice. Failure to make a scheduled interview
appointment will result in termination of all
Careers4Terps privileges and future on-campus
interviews.
Who
is the on-campus interviewing
staff member?
, Coordinator, 301.405.2780
When
I graduate, can I participate
in OCI if I haven't found
employment?
Yes,
alumni can participate up to 6 months following
graduation. Update your Careers4Terps profile before
applying for positions.
What
should I do once I accept
a job offer?
The
ethical course of action is to stop interviewing
with other organizations and honor your commitment
to work for the employer hiring you. If you want
to deactivate your Careers4Terps account send
that request to ucc-studenthelp@umd.edu. Also,
notify any employers with whom you have already
interviewed.
How
can I help other UM
students and graduates
obtain employment? Contribute
positively to your employer's organization and
you will be doing a great job of representing
the University of Maryland. Many employers choose
to recruit here because of outstanding graduates
they've hired in the past.
Encourage your employer to continue to recruit
at UM and ask if you can assist. Current students
like to talk to alums in the company or organization.
Help other students by e-mailing
us employment opportunities (internships and full-time)
in your company.
