Course Description

  • Complements supervised work experience related to students' field of study;
  • Open to all majors;
  • Benefits include the ability to: combine academic and "real world" work; experiences, learn about a professional field, develop professional work skills, and enhance marketability to future employers;
  • Seminars address career development issues including resume writing, networking, and portfolio development;

Because of the diversity and unpredictability of work schedules, this class will not have regular formal meetings. Instead, students are expected to attend two seminars during the semester. In addition, the instructor will communicate with students and supervisors on a regular basis by e-mail, telephone, fax, and/or mail.

This course may be repeated.

Course Objectives

  • To understand the relationship of internship experience to major and/or intended career path
  • To recognize and develop professional work skills
  • To explore career options

Prerequisites
Students wishing to register for UNIV 099 must:

  • Be in good academic standing (minimum 2.0 GPA for undergraduates, 3.0 GPA for graduate students)
  • Submit a transcript and a position description to the instructor
  • Prior approval of the instructor is required.

Grading
1. Grades will be assigned on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis. Unsatisfactory grades will appear as an "F" on your transcript.

2. Termination Policy:
Students who are terminated from their internship must meet with the course instructor as soon as possible

Course Requirements
To receive a Satisfactory (S) grade for UNIV 099*, students must complete the following:

1. Learning Contract
Within 2 weeks of beginning the internship, students must turn in a completed learning contract available online or at the University Career Center.

2. Attendance at Seminars

Undergraduate Students: Attendance at two seminars, one seminar in Session I and one seminar in Session II (one seminar during Summer Session and Reflective Essay)
Seminars will be scheduled during the semester. Topics will concentrate on career development issues and may cover such subjects as, resume writing, networking, portfolio development, and job search techniques.

3. Completion of Internship Work Hours
A minimum of 75 hours must be completed at the work site by the end of the semester.
5 hours per week x 15 weeks per semester = 75 hours.

4. Documentation of Hours Worked
Students are expected to keep a record of their hours worked. The record will be signed by the supervisor and turned in to the instructor mid-semester and at the end of the semester.

5. Self Evaluation
You will submit a 3-page evaluation form, which discusses your experience as it has affected your career goals and your comments about the experience. Evaluation forms will be distributed mid-semester.

6. Supervisor Evaluation
Your supervisor must complete an evaluation of your performance. Evaluation forms will be distributed mid-semester. You are responsible for seeing that the completed evaluation form is submitted to the instructor by the due date.

*Failure to complete all of the above requirements will result in an Unsatisfactory (U) grade. An Unsatisfactory (U) grade will appear as an (F) on your transcript.
